Let’s talk about something foundational: ethics in business—specifically, Christian business ethics.
What is it?
Why does it matter?
What can you do to make it real in your company?
Let’s break it down.
What Are Business Ethics?
Secular definitions lay the groundwork:
- Investopedia calls business ethics “the study of proper business policies and practices regarding controversial issues…”
- Wikipedia says it’s about “ethical principles and moral or ethical problems that arise in a business environment.”
But as Christian business owners, we don’t stop there.
We don’t just answer to the market, the law, or what’s trending on LinkedIn—we answer to God.
That means we run our business under a higher standard: biblical ethics.
What Does the Bible Say?
Colossians 3:1–6 gives us a powerful reminder:
“Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things… Put to death whatever belongs to your earthly nature… greed, which is idolatry.”
It’s clear: greed, impurity, deceit, and selfish ambition don’t belong in a business that belongs to Christ.
Your leadership, policies, and practices should reflect heavenly values—not just corporate strategy.
Why Do Christian Business Ethics Matter?
Because people matter.
Because your witness matters.
Because you can’t separate your faith from your work.
When we compromise our ethics—especially in business—we undermine the very gospel we say we live by.
And let’s be honest: your team knows when something’s off. So do your clients. Integrity isn’t something you can fake long term.
Ethics give you:
- A clear compass in confusing situations
- A standard of fairness even under pressure
- A culture of trust within your team and community
If God owns your business (Psalm 24:1), you’re simply a steward. And stewards are called to be faithful, not flashy.
What Can You Do About It?
Here’s how to start building real ethics into your business structure:
1. Write It Down
Create a simple section in your team handbook or leadership documents titled: “Our Ethical Commitments.”
Include:
- Your core values
- Scriptural foundations
- Real-world examples
- Expected behaviors
2. Ask These 3 Questions
Adapted from The Power of Ethical Management:
- Is it legal?
- Is it balanced? (Is it fair to all involved?)
- Is it right? (Does it honor God and reflect biblical truth?)
If the answer isn’t a confident yes to all three… pause.
3. Run Real-Life Scenarios
Don’t wait for an ethical crisis to test your values. Talk through possible situations as a team:
- What if a vendor asks for a kickback?
- What if a negative review hits social media?
- What if a client asks you to bend the truth?
Create space to work through responses in a faith-forward, practical way.
Final Thought: It’s Not Just About Rules
Christian business ethics aren’t about being perfect. They’re about being intentional.
You’re not just building a brand. You’re building a reputation—before God and before others.
In the end, ethics aren’t just what you say. They’re how you show up when it’s hard.
Set your mind on things above.
Stay rooted in the Word.
And lead your business like it belongs to the King—because it does.
