Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others. Philippians 2:3-4

I love the book of Philippians.  Paul is writing to a group of believers who are making an impact on their community in the name of Jesus.  It is exciting to think what happens when people fully surrender to the power of Christ in their lives.

In this passage, we see some wisdom from Paul.  He is encouraging believers to “have the same love, being one in spirit and of one mind.”  Then He describes what it would look like if we were of one mind.

We would be humble, which he quickly defines as valuing others above ourselves.  He tells us to look to the interests of others.  Then, he gives us the example of Jesus to remind us how He acted on earth.

Jesus was a servant and put the needs of others before Himself.  Paul wants to remind us not to think too much of ourselves.  We must be obedient to the words of scripture and live our lives in a way that points people to Christ.

The next section, Paul tells us that we are to work out our salvation “in order to fulfill His good purpose.”  Then, he reminds us not to grumble or argue, but to live our lives blameless and pure.  He tells us we are children of God.

Think about that for a moment.  We are called ‘children of God.’  Paul tells us to “shine among (this world) like stars in the sky.”  How are you doing as a child and as a shining light pointing people to the Creator?

As business owners, when we truly value others and put their needs before our own, we make better products, we have a better service and we have a better business.  Our business will grow because we are caring for our customers, employees and community.

If we have done what we are called to do, which is our purpose in business, we will be shining stars to “warped and crooked generation.”  That shining light and the way you do things differently as a Christian business owner will remind the world that there is a Savior and He wants to have a relationship with them.

You were called to be in business.  You were called to impact lives for God because you are a child of God. He wants you to rise above the crowds to be a shining light that brings people closer to Him.  Your actions tell the world who you belong to and what you believe in.

Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others. Philippians 2:3-4
