Today we take a peak back to the Old Testament law. God is talking to His promised people. He is reminding them of all that He has done for them. He reminds His people of the manna that He provided and the direction that He gave them.
He goes on to tell them that He will take them to the Promised Land. It is a place that will fulfill all of their needs and then some. He even points out that mining and business will be easy in the new land.
Then, God poses a gentle warning in verse 11. “Be careful that you do not forget the Lord your God, failing to observe his commands.”
God knows that when life becomes comfortable, it is easy to leave Him behind. We can get caught up in our lifestyle and forget to give God the credit for everything we have accomplished.
Think about it for a moment. When we succeed, do we think “I did that.” Or, do we look at our accomplishments and say, “God did that.” It is all about giving credit where credit is due.
“You may say to yourself, “My power and the strength of my hands have produced this wealth for me.” (vs 17) But we must keep in mind that God created us. God gave us everything we have.
Who gave us skills, abilities and a brain to work? Who lined up the right opportunities to allow us to become business owners and succeed? Who allowed us to be born into the right country, the right family and at the right time?
The simple answer is, God. Yes, we have worked hard to get where we are, but God was behind all of it, orchestrating our lives. He planned for the situations and people in our lives to develop us so that one day we will be ready to succeed.
He is a sovereign God. He is in control of everything. Though we live in fallen world and people may have hurt us and life may not be what we hoped it would be, God still brought us through those times and allowed us to be the person we are today.
You are a child of God. You are a conqueror. You are His and He wants you to succeed.
But remember the Lord your God, for it is He who gives you the ability to produce wealth, and so confirms his covenant, which He swore to your ancestors, as it is today. Deuteronomy 8:18
