For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. Hebrews 4:12

Hebrews is a book written to God’s chosen people.  It has some powerful wisdom for our world today.  We start by talking about a Sabbath rest for God’s people.

We understand that God’s promises have stood since the creation of the World.  One of those promises is a Sabbath rest for His people. It’s hard for those of us not born as Jews to understand the intensity with which a Sabbath is performed.

Sabbath comes from the word “Sabbat” which means “to stop or rest from work.”  Some Jewish doctrine even limited the amount of steps someone is allowed to take on a Sabbath day and others wouldn’t even allow lights to be lit.

So, what is a Sabbath rest?  A Sabbath rest is when all the work is done and no more work needs to be done.  Jesus became our Sabbath rest at the cross.  He died to complete the law and bring reconciliation to all people to God.

In verse 12, we are reminded that God’s word stand true throughout our lives.  We are told that God’s word is so powerful it even divides our whole being.  It takes our emotions, thoughts, and attitudes and lines them up with all of creation.

God wants His people reconciled with Him.  He sent Christ along with all the promises found in scripture that point to Him being the completion of our salvation.  We are reminded that Christ is the High Priest and the last one that is ever needed.  We are allowed to approach the throne of grace with confidence.

As business owners, we can get sidetracked by being busy that we forget two powerful concepts found in Hebrews 4.  Number one, we all need rest.  If God rested on the seventh day, He did so only so we can have His example of how we should live our lives.

Second, the Word of God is something that is powerful in our lives.  Everything that God wanted to tell us is between the pages of these words.  In these words we find who we are and who God wants us to be in this world.

There is a fallen world that does not know about the power of Jesus Christ living in their lives.   There are hurting people that do not understand the reconciliation we have with Christ at the cross as our high priest.  It is our duty to tell the world about what Christ has done so the whole world can rest in God’s presence.

For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. Hebrews 4:12
