Jesus said, “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” John 16:33

If you ever feel discouraged, you should read the entire book of John.  I highly suggest at least reading this chapter.  In it we see Jesus telling the disciples goodbye. He is encouraging them and reminding them about all they will go through tough times in life, but He is always with them.

He starts the chapter off by telling them that people will reject them.  Then, He quickly reminds them that the Holy Spirit is coming.  He calls Him the Advocate, Comforter or Helper depending on your translation. (vs 1-15)

Advocate is someone who goes between you and your situation.  Jesus is reminding the disciples that they will not be alone when He leaves this earth.  He tells they the Advocate will be here to help them and strengthen them.

In the next section, Jesus begins His goodbye.  The disciples are wondering what He is saying and He answers them.  He tells them they will feel grief, but they must always remember He will be back and they will rejoice. (vs 20-24)

Finally, He reminds them that they have a direct relationship with God.  He tells them that God loves them and wants to have that direct relationship with them. (vs 27)  He tells them that He is going back to the Father where He came from.

We all have those times when we feel the pressure of this world caving in on us.  Yet, in these times we must take a moment to remember God is with us.  Jesus walked on this earth and went through things you and I can never really imagine.  His pain and suffering on the cross was given freely for us to live in this world.

There is an old saying, “I complained about the fact I had no shoes until I met the man with no feet.”  Life is all about perspective.  We may not be able to pay the light bill this month, but there are people who don’t have a home to put lights in.  Take life in perspective and realize you are never really alone.

Read the words of Jesus.  Look to Him when times get tough.  Too often we run out trying to find the answer without guidance.  That is what the Advocate is for. We should be sitting in His presence and waiting on Him to lead, guide and direct us.

The Bible reminds us to rejoice even when times get tough.  It tells us to pray and to be thankful in all circumstances.  (1 Thes 5:16-18).  And as business owners we must keep in mind that everything we do brings Honor God. Remember what Jesus said: “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” John 16:33
